Julie goes walking...

On 13th May 2017 I am heading down to Minehead, Somerset to embark on the epic 630 mile walk that is the South West Coast Path, finishing some eight weeks later in Pool, Dorset. Throughout the journey I will post photos, experiences, thoughts and anything else that takes my fancy. Please feel free to dip in and see where I am and how I am getting on.

Mevagissey to Carlyon Bay

This blog relates to Friday. It was an early start for us, we needed to have tents packed, ready to catch the 8.15am bus from Gerrans to St Austell, then a transfer to the charming Charlestown (Poldark Central) and Carlyon Bay campsite. Another bus ride which winds its way down single track roads to sleepy villages where no one catches the bus! An early start meant that we arrived in St Austell (or better known to locals as St Awful) train/bus station by 9.30. At this point i must record how impressed Sarah is/was by the train station: a one stop shop. Sarah was able to purchase a train ticket for tomorrows (Saturdays) return journey to Cambridge (she thought the ticket office lady was very helpful). We were able to gather an awful lot of information from a helpful tourist information lady (and charge my mobile), and finally have a cuppa tea and toast. Constantine Bay to Mawgan Porth

What a beautiful day its been. The morning started off overcast, but by the time we got going, caught the bus and arrived at Constantine Bay the sun was breaking through the clouds. From then on the weather was perfect for walking: sun (not to hot) and a constant breeze. The weather made the views exceptional today. The photo's don't do it justice but the colour of the sea is amazing: so many different colour blues. Every bay (and there is many), has golden sand, abundance of space, rock pools (some large enough to use as a small swimming pool), and the sea is enticing (no dipping yet). Some of the smaller bays (harder to access) are exclusive to just a few people. Colin has been astounded by the sheer beauty of the coastline: the clicking of the camera is constant. I'll say it again: these views, beaches and sea (and for the moment, the weather) could compete with the beaches in the world (including OZ). The terrain was mostly level: easy walking. Praa Sands to Gunwalloe: we had a cream tea

I'm a bit behind with my blog so this post relates to Wednesday. It was a slow start to the day. By the time we showered, faffed around, found the farmer to pay for the campsite, faffed around some more, then made our way down to the bar in the bay (home and away) for breakfast it was quite late. After food and a bit more faffing around we started todays walk. The coast path ambled along: gentle ascents and descents. We came across a mine used in the 1995 version of Poldark (see photo). The weather was gorgeous ( a little hot and not enough breeze) i think we've all suffered from a bit too much sun; there isn't much shade on the path. We took our time, lots of stops to observe the view and drink water. When we made it to Porthleven (a sun trap), we had out first cream tea (see photo). It was lovely! Some time later and a bit more faffing we set off. We crossed Loe Bar which is a sandbank created by storms which cut off the Cober Valley from the sea. The bar...
