Praa Sands to Gunwalloe: we had a cream tea

I'm a bit behind with my blog so this post relates to Wednesday.

It was a slow start to the day. By the time we showered, faffed around, found the farmer to pay for the campsite, faffed around some more, then made our way down to the bar in the bay (home and away) for breakfast it was quite late. After food and a bit more faffing around we started todays walk.

The coast path ambled along: gentle ascents and descents. We came across a mine used in the 1995 version of Poldark (see photo).

The weather was gorgeous ( a little hot and not enough breeze) i think we've all suffered from a bit too much sun; there isn't much shade on the path. We took our time, lots of stops to observe the view and drink water.

When we made it to Porthleven (a sun trap), we had out first cream tea (see photo). It was lovely! Some time later and a bit more faffing we set off.

We crossed Loe Bar which is a sandbank created by storms which cut off the Cober Valley from the sea. The bar was formed in the 12th century and until then merchant ships could sail up the estuary as far as Helston. Beside Loe Bar is Loe Pool, the largest freshwater lake in Cornwall. Here the distance between Loe Pool and the sea is about 200 yards. (This info was cut and paste from the web site). I tried out a panoramic photo, but sorry the blog won't let me upload it.

We briefly saw a seal in the surf at Gunwalloe Cove, And again around the rocks.

Nice meal at the local pub, Followed by a fast drive back to Praa Sands by a Cornish taxi driver: i'm not sure if he had been partaking of the local brew but it was a fast, highly entertaining drive. The Cornish accent was a bit hard to understand so we all did a lot of nodding and laughing but not really quite getting what he was saying. At the end he knocked £18 off of the meter for us so that was a result.

When we Arrived back at the 'home and away' bar in Praa Sands it was 'open mic night' which was truely awful. Other than the one or two, i suspect the others were rejects from the X factor or Britian has no talent: they certainly lack talent in Praa Sands.

Fitbit records: 28,592 steps, 12.54 miles and 142 flights of stairs.

Official miles of the SWCP were about 7 miles.

  5. Mmmmmm The Cream Tea looks delicious. Didn't see you in Poldark, we watched it on Wednesday. If the taxi driver knocked £18 off the bill, sounds like you met Dick Turpin (or Cornish equivalent) what was he trying to charge. Bet he thought we got some rich grockles here.
