Bus day: Lizard to Falmouth
This blog relates to Saturday.
Because i'm not keen to backpack: carrying a heavy backpack on these paths will slow any progress down to a crawl (lucky if i manage 4/5 miles a day) and i don't know what it would do to my joints:-? This means linear walking from A to B is not possible so we are reliant on the buses (my new found passion: buses) - sorry Sarah. The bus service from Coverack to Falmouth is pretty rubbish (and i suspect from Falmouth onwards as well). But with little choice we caught an early bus from Lizard and spent the next 2hours on a bus (quick change at Helston).
I've discovered that Travelling by bus is:
1) relaxing - because once on, you let someone else take responsibility to get you from A to B
2) on a double decker you can see countryside out of view for car drivers
3) entertaining - you either overhear interesting comments (see comment of the day) or meet nice people
Like my dad did I'll wait for my free bus pass before taking this up as a hobby, although it would make a great concept for a book: 'bus journey's with my father'.
When we did finally reach Falmouth, it just so happens this weekend is the 'sea shanty festival': lots of pirates and sea loving people. Sea shanty's everywhere along the high street, mariners and quays!
We caught another bus to the campsite, set up and walked to the little cove bu the site. Sarah finally got to swim.., yeh! I remained on the beach: hanker chief on my head and trousers rolled up (i'd left my string vest at home), looking like sarah's mother and trying to catch up with my blog (i'm a slave to this blog!).
Did i mention its hot!
After a quick change we walked back into town along the coast which took longer than expected which was probably due to talking to an Australian couple. They had arrived in the UK around about the 15th May and had driven around England, Wales, Scotland and both Nothern and Southern Ireland, due to fly home on Monday: they loved the Uk.
We managed to eat fish and chips, have a pint of cider and watch a few sea shanty groups before joing the drunks in the taxi rank.
For what should have been an easy day i felt exhausted and my feet hurt, i was glad to lay down on my blow up... bed roll!
Fitbit records; 29,558 steps, 12.98 miles and 47 flight of stairs.
Several Comments of the day overheard whilst on the bus:
'He was extra large, but long in the neck'
'I've got 19 T.shirts and 19 wet suits'
'We got beat 21 - 0, i was sent off and had to sit on the bus for 91minutes!'
By the way Falmouth is beautiful. And did i mention its hot!
Photo's:
Lovely beach, and it looks empty, my kind of paradise.
